Newborn Baby 101: Things I wish I knew!!

1. Dont panic, it will be ok

2. Feed your baby every 2, 3 hours depending on the advice you received from the doctor. You wont need to feed solid food till about 6 months. Only breastmilk or formula.

3. Burp after every single feeding. Many times babies cry from feeling gassy. If bottle feeding, burp after every ounce. If breastfeeding,  burp after feeding on one side

4. Your baby will not be sleeping through the night. They wont know the difference between day and night yet

5. Do not give them a bath until the umbilical cord falls off

6. Visit the pediatrician the very first week

7. Do not use powder, lotion or apply kajal in the eyes unless otherwise advised

8. Choose a car seat that is convertible. The one you can use as an infant car seat and toddler car seat

9. Wash, wash wash your hands before picking up your baby because baby can easily pick up germs

10. Let others help watch the baby because both parents will need help and rest

11. Keep your baby elevated in the crib or on the floor. This will prevent spit up or gas getting built up

12. If you opted for only breastfeeding,  pump in the morning after feeding your baby. You will get the most milk in the morning

13. Wash your baby's clothes separately.  And try using all natural detergent

14. If your baby cries for no reason its called colic. In other words, many babies cry even after diaper change, being feed and clear of pain. In this case, the baby might just cry for attention to be held, walked, rocked or for comfort

15. Try to keep baby inside for about a month. Keep the baby away from highly infected areas such as grocery stores, department stores, play grounds etc.

16. Babies usually feel similar temperature as us. However,  in the tummy they felt more warmth so put an extra layer on them

17. You will have to change baby's diaper after pretty much every feeding. You will need about 10 to 12 diapers a day. More or less depending on your baby.

18. You will feel like having a baby is the hardest thing yet the most amazing. If you feel like your life just stopped because you had a baby, it is normal to feel this way.  It will pass.

19. Use baby wipes to wipe pee and poo

20. Do not go too long before changing diaper. I say every 2 hours to prevent diaper rash

21. Mom will go through lots of ups and down emotionally so be sure to talk to anyone you feel comfortable with.  Cry it out or talk it out till you feel like for that moment your emotions are out.  It's okay to keep feeling up and down up and down

22. Check your baby's temperature.  And keep the baby away from anyone who is sick

23. SID known as the Sudden Infant Death. Keep an eye on your baby at all times especially at night when we are resting. SIDs can occur for many reasons and its quick. Make sure your baby is breathing and blankets or stuffed animals are blocking their breathing.  Babies cant move so they cant move an object from their face.

24. If mommy and daddy need rest, it is ok to give your baby a bottle. Many studies and book suggest not giving bottle or pacifier till after 1 month however adult body needs rest so just follow your instinct and go with it.

25. Do not take out your frustration or sleep deprivation on your baby. Your baby is helpless and needs your love, care and warmth.

I hope these will help you. Good luck and wish you all the best.
